Columbia, SC – January 9, 2025 – SC UpLift Community Outreach is thrilled to announce its selection as a recipient of a $2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) through the Older Adult Home Modification Program (OAHMP). This transformative funding will enhance the lives of aging adults in Chester, Fairfield and Union counties by making critical home modifications that promote safety, accessibility, and comfort, enabling seniors to age in place with dignity.
For over 15 years, SC UpLift has been dedicated to improving housing conditions for South Carolina residents. This new grant will allow the organization to modify 280 homes over the next three years, benefiting approximately 93 aging adults annually in Chester, Fairfield, and Union counties. Typical improvements will include bathroom safety upgrades, enhanced lighting, railings, and other accessibility features tailored to individual needs.
“This grant is a significant step toward ensuring our aging population can remain in their homes safely and affordably,” said Kevin Wimberly, President/CEO of SC UpLift. “We are grateful to HUD for recognizing the importance of aging in place and for supporting our mission to empower communities.”
SC UpLift will partner with i58, Incorporated and Suite 65, LLC, two organizations instrumental in client assessments, community outreach, and contractor coordination. These partnerships will ensure efficient delivery of services while maintaining the high-quality standards SC UpLift is known for. Additional collaborations with local organizations like South Carolina Department of Aging, Union County Library System, and MUSC Hospital will expand wraparound support services, including referrals for major home repairs and access to critical social resources.
